Malka Michaela Barshishat
Children's Books Illustration & Fine Art
When I paint and draw, I become alive.
It is my aphrodisiac, my asylum, my secret garden.
Born and raised in Prague, Czech Republic, I started drawing on the walls as a toddler and have been drawing ever since.
Growing up in then communist Czechoslovakia, an aspiring artist had to have connections to be accepted into fine arts school.
I ended up studying fashion design and sewing.
After high school, I studied photography in England and attended drawing and painting classes.
When I moved to New York I was employed as an artist and project manager of murals and decorative painting at Evolving Image.
While my family in New York began to grow, I started my career as a freelance illustrator and worked part time as an art teacher in a girl's school in Brooklyn.
Several years later I moved to Israel where I live now with my husband and children focusing on creating fine Judaica and illustrating children’s books.
I use pencils, inks and watercolors to create my illustrations.
I am an animal and nature lover and that reflects in many of my works.
I also enjoy many crafts such as crochet, sewing, and papermaking.
How I like my coffee?
What is my favorite color, song, and place on Earth?
That, I will let you guess... :)
